Gases are used in a myriad of different ways throughout hospitals. There are several different kinds of medical gases, and they all serve a unique purpose. They are often supplied through vacuums, and a hospital’s ability to distribute gas is extremely important for the care of patients.
Medical gas is used in many different ways:
- Medical Air. Different than pure oxygen, medical air is ultra-clean and purified, so it’s ideal for situations where patients have delicate respiratory systems. Especially common in critical care units and NICUs, this medical gas can also be used during anesthesia.
- Helium. In many medical facilities, helium is a medical gas used as an alternative to carbon dioxide, which is typically used to enlarge and stabilize body cavities during medical procedures. Using helium helps to prevent respiratory acidosis, which occurs when a patient’s lungs cannot fully remove the carbon dioxide introduced. It can also be used in conjunction with oxygen in the treatment of certain respiratory conditions, including asthma.
- Oxygen. Oxygen is an extremely common medical gas, as it can be used in a variety of different situations. Vital for emergency resuscitation, inhalation therapy, and in the support of conditions like COPD, hemorrhage, carbon monoxide poisoning, and more, it’s an important gas for hospitals to have on hand.
